SWB students race to raise £14k for Cancer Research

For the second year in a row, Ormiston SWB Academy has hosted a whole school Race for Life to raise awareness and money for Cancer Research.

Over 1200 students and staff from the academy, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, have ran, jogged, and walked their way to raise over £14,000 for the important cause.

This marks the second time the school has hosted the event, organised in memory of former student Alexen Henriquez whose positive and fighting spirit provided inspiration for the entire school, and for all those in the local community who have faced difficulties brought about by cancer.

With the race taking place on the school grounds, the young fundraisers put their fitness to the test for charity, raising funds through individual donations and sponsorship. Throughout the course, friends cheered each other on as they completed the run and celebrated their achievement together. The race provided an important opportunity for students to celebrate and remember Alexen’s life, but also to walk or run on behalf of their own loved ones.

In celebration of the event’s community spirit, the school has also created a video to share with friends and family, documenting the highs, the laughter, and the energy from the day:

Since first supporting the charity, the school has raised over £14,000 for the cause which will help fund groundbreaking research. The academy is inviting anyone from the community to share anything they may be able to donate to support the charity as part of their fundraising via: https://www.justgiving.com/page/ormiston-swb or by getting in touch with the school directly.

Dan Mason, Principal at Ormiston SWB Academy, said:

“I am incredibly proud of our students, staff and the whole SWB community for their dedication and commitment to supporting this important cause. It has been amazing to see so many get involved with our Race for Life, which represents so much to all of us and really represents the very best of our community spirit.

“Cancer affects so many people and we wanted to create the opportunity for our community to show their support and remember those affected. It is so important that we celebrate and remember everyone who has battled with cancer, including our very own Alexen, whose positive spirit and infectious energy for life was inspirational for our whole school. We are really proud to be able to support this meaningful cause and grateful to our community in continuing to support our pupils and this event.”
