Curriculum Overview
At Ormiston SWB Academy, we strive to deliver a first-class education where every student, regardless of starting point, disadvantage or SEND need, thrives through great teaching, strong literacy, and positive behaviour. We offer a full and rich curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, ensuring access to a broad range of academic subjects. Our commitment to excellent outcomes empowers learners with the knowledge, skills and character to succeed in life and contribute confidently to their communities.
We want to create consistency and alignment across the Academy so that every classroom can share in our collective knowledge of what makes for the best curriculum, the best teaching and valuable assessment.
Our conscious curriculum promotes strong cross-subject links, with a core focus on embedding literacy and numeracy throughout all disciplines. By ensuring consistent language and teaching techniques across subjects, pupils develop transferable skills that strengthen reading, writing, and mathematical fluency. Our Careful Readers Strategy is a literacy approach designed to help students become more thoughtful, analytical, and engaged readers. This approach enhances retention, deepens understanding, and empowers learners to apply key skills confidently across varied contexts.
The CORE Curriculum
Ormiston SWB Academy students are expected to demonstrate a vast array of characteristics that will prepare them for future success. Our core values clearly signal to staff, students and parents the importance of Character, Organisation, Resilience and Excellence which ensure our Academy is a focused, happy and a safe place to learn and achieve. Our values are supported by our C.O.R.E Futures Programme. This is aimed at giving students the opportunity to have experiences, which deepen knowledge, embed skills and strengthen character. Through Years 7 to 13, students will study and take part in an enrichment programme including visits, courses, events and activities alongside their timetabled lessons.
