Home Learning
Home Learning
At Ormiston SWB Academy, home learning is a vital part of our curriculum strategy, designed to reinforce classroom learning, promote independence, and support long-term knowledge retention. We enable students to secure a strong foundation of knowledge and skills through strategic engagement and regular retrieval practice, ensuring that learning is not forgotten over time but built upon in future lessons.
Home learning is carefully planned across subjects to complement our five-year curriculum journey, and is underpinned by our commitment to:
- Great teaching that extends beyond the classroom.
- Strong literacy and numeracy embedded in all tasks.
- Excellent outcomes supported by consistent practice.
- Positive behaviour through responsibility and self-motivation.
Home Learning at Ormiston SWB Academy
Home Learning is set across the curriculum and is designed to:
- Be regular, relevant and purposeful.
- Provide opportunities to engage with knowledge organisers and retrieval strategies.
- Encourage use of subject-specific wider reading.
- Support complex application of knowledge to new contexts.
- Be incorporated into future lessons, ensuring continuity and progression.
- Students use their Classcharts pupil login to support home learning, which includes homework details, review materials and wider reading recommendations for each subject.
Supporting Home Learning
We recognise the importance of the partnership between parents and the academy in supporting students to maximise their learning. All extended learning is shared via our online live reporting portal, Class charts, allowing families to stay informed and engaged.
Pupils are also invited to homework club Monday- Thursday until 3;40pm on Sanderson Computers, supported by members of staff to help students access and complete their homework.
We also offer parent workshops during our calendared coffee mornings & evenings to help families understand how to support their child’s home learning effectively and provide strategies to support pupils literacy and numeracy in particular.
