On Friday 21st March, a group of our wonderful Performing Arts students were invited to the 21st Wolverhampton City Fairtrade Partnership Reception, where they got to perform to the Mayor of Wolverhampton . Students did an amazing job showcasing their talents and received lots of praise from Councillors and invited guests. Students also learnt about the history of Fairtrade within the area. Mr Tipton was very proud of the students who put SWB on the regional pedestal once again. They were truly amazing advocates.
Earlier this year Layla Perry (year 8) became the first ever recipient of the Fairtrade Foundation Young Campaigner of the Year Award. She works really hard to raise awareness of the issues around Fair Trade including making Fair Trade jewellery with people with extra needs and leading craft workshops for children without parents. She is an advocate for the Susan Vickers Foundation. She also works with younger children to introduce them to fair trade issues in an age-appropriate way . She makes badges and gifts to raise money for the cause.
At the Fair Trade Civic Reception she read a really evocative poem which she had written which made us all think deeply about the human issues that Fair Trade is trying to combat and was given a standing ovation. Layla works so hard in her own time to promote and raise awareness of Fair Trade both in the Academy community and beyond. She is a truly amazing young lady.
