As part of the CORE program, Year 7 students took part in a field trip to Wolverhampton Art Gallery to develop an appreciation for different types of art. Students were really engaged with the artwork on display and were asked to draw a picture of themselves with their favorite piece of art. Students feedback was that they enjoyed seeing the different variety of art, especially the sculptures and the pop art.

Mother Tongue / Other Tongue Poetry Competition 2020

The competition is open to all primary and secondary schools in the West Midlands region.

Mother Tongue Other Tongue is a multilingual poetry competition that celebrates cultural diversity and the many languages currently spoken in schools across the UK.

The aim of the Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition is to celebrate languages, culture and language-learning, giving students the opportunity to practise and improve their foreign language skills (any language they are learning in school) and appreciate their heritage, using poetry.

Mother Tongue entries will be in two parts: The first part is the poem. This can be an original, creative piece, or a poem or song that is ‘remembered’ – i.e. something in your first language that you recall, or that has been told to you by a relative. This can be in any language but English. The second part should be a short explanation of the inspiration behind the piece, where it comes from, or why it is important to the person submitting it (no more than half a page). This part must be written in English and is the part your entry will be judged on.

Other Tongue entries must be an original poem written in a language that is not the first language spoken by the person writing it. Entries are welcomed in French, Spanish, German or Italian.

Winning students from the West Midlands will be invited to the National Celebration Event at Manchester Metropolitan University in June date to be confirmed.

Please get your entries in to Miss Redman by Friday 17th April.

"Jour de Fête" (French)

Francois is the postman in a tiny rural French village where the pace of life is unhurried, and his delivery of the mail is possibly even slower. But then Francois sees a documentary on the swiftness and efficiency of the postal system in the US. Shocked and inspired, he sets out to try and match the Americans for speed, which is quite a challenge when you've only got a rickety bicycle to work with!

This delightful comedy stars the legendary French comedian Jacques Tati - perhaps most famous for his character Monsieur Hulot - and Jour De Fete finds him at his most hilarious.

The #IWILL volunteers are a great group of students from Year 7 right up to Sixth Form, who are volunteering on a number of projects. For the last two days they have been working on creating a new assault course at Baggeridge Country Park along with Challenge Academy Adventure Hub. When they've finished they'll have provided an activity for the whole community to use, for years to come.

They have worked tirelessly, and even uncovered a historical artifact! Witness their excitement as they try to figure out what the mysterious object is, as they dig deep and learn the meaning of resilience, one of our CORE values.

It wasn't all work, though, as the students enjoyed a guided walk around Baggeridge, climbed a steep (and muddy!) man made hill, and had a go on the high rope equipment ! One of the students tackled her fear of heights and took part in all of the activities, again showcasing great resilience. All the students had a fantastic day and are looking forward to coming back in the future.

CORE DAY 3 on Friday 14th Feb saw year 13s 'preparing for the next step'.

They were given a series of challenges throughout the day to see which team would win.

They developed their character, organisation, resilience and excellence skills by completing a masterchef challenge - students had to design a menu for a main course and a dessert and were awarded marks for taste, price and how healthy their meals were, as well as bonus marks for how well they worked as a team and how hygienic and tidy they were.

Students then had to work through a series of practical challenges, including how to budget, how to work a washing machine and dishwasher, practical ironing and sewing tips, how to put on a duvet cover, as well as how to be safe using household chemicals.

Students were an absolute credit to themselves and managed to feed all their group with the food they had made, with either lunch or a special valentine's dinner!

Well done all!
